Sudan Suspends Import of All Products from Kenya

Published:

Sudan has announced a ban on all imports from Kenya, effective immediately and until further notice. This decision comes as a response to Kenya’s hosting of meetings with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and its allies.

The decree, issued by Sudan’s Ministry of Trade and Supply, suspends the import of all Kenyan products through all ports, crossings, airports, and entry points. This move is based on a cabinet decision and aims to protect Sudan’s “supreme interests,” affirm its sovereignty, and safeguard its national security.

This ban is likely to have significant economic implications, particularly for Kenya’s tea industry, as Sudan is a major importer of Kenyan tea. In 2023, Kenya exported $48.2 million worth of goods to Sudan, with tea accounting for $29.6 million of that total

The Minister of Trade, Mr. Omar Ahmed Mohamed Ali, issued a decree based on Cabinet Decision No. 129 of 2024, which ordered the suspension of imports of all products from Kenya through all ports, crossings, airports, and entry points.

This decision comes in response to Kenya’s hosting of the militia and its allies, and its sponsorship of their activities and meetings. The decree aims to protect Sudan’s supreme interests and affirm its sovereignty and national security, effective from the date of the decision until further notice.

The decree instructed all concerned authorities to implement this decision immediately
