Al-Yurae- Al Jazeera – Al Jazeera- Net correspondent Mohamed Zakaria reported, citing local sources, that several displaced persons were killed and injured after Rapid Support Forces (RSF) targeted Abu Shouk IDP camp north of El Fasher city in western Sudan on Tuesday.
The Abu Shouk Camp Emergency Room announced on its Facebook page that the shelling resulted in six deaths and several civilian injuries in various areas of the camp. The group emphasized that the situation in the camp is deteriorating, with increasing fears among residents due to ongoing attacks.
Dr. Ibrahim Khater, Director General of the State Ministry of Health, stated that most of the casualties were women and children. Speaking to Al Jazeera Net, he noted that this attack is part of an escalation of violence against displaced persons, exacerbating their suffering amid deteriorating humanitarian conditions.
Khater confirmed that medical teams are making significant efforts to provide necessary care to the injured, while the urgent need for humanitarian aid increases. He called on the international community to respond promptly to protect civilians and provide necessary support.
This attack is part of a series of assaults by RSF forces since May 10, 2024, on El Fasher city and surrounding camps, resulting in dozens of deaths and injuries, and displacing thousands of civilians to safer areas.
Abu Shouk camp houses thousands of displaced persons who fled their original areas during the Darfur conflict in 2003. These residents face difficulties accessing basic services provided by international agencies and organizations.
Meanwhile, the Sudanese Army’s air force has been conducting a series of raids on RSF gathering sites in the north, east, and south of the city.
The army stated that its forces continue to advance in the city, achieving new field victories. It added that it carried out a successful drone attack, inflicting casualties and equipment losses on the RSF.
The army confirmed that its defenses shot down four RSF drones, which had shelled Nifasha IDP camp west of El Fasher and large areas of Zamzam camp south of the city.
For over 10 months, RSF forces have besieged El Fasher city, continuously shelling it in attempts to storm it. However, army forces and allied armed movements have so far prevented this.
RSF is accused of committing widespread human rights violations in Darfur and other areas under its full or partial control, which it denies.
Since April 2023, Sudan has been experiencing a fierce war between the Sudanese Army and RSF, resulting in at least 20,000 deaths and the displacement of over 14 million people.
