Dozens die at Erdeme camp for Sudanese refugees in eastern Chad

Radio Dabanga reported that 15 elderly and chronically ill Sudanese refugees died of malnutrition and the spread of diseases in the Ardeme Sudanese refugee camp in eastern Chad in January. Five Sudanese refugee women died in childbirth in January at the camp.

Erdmi camp for Sudanese refugees confirmed to Radio Dabanga that the causes of death among the elderly and people with chronic diseases are due to the lack of food, pointing to the harsh conditions they live in the camp in addition to the lack of medicines for chronic diseases, which led to complications that led to their death during the month of January.

They attributed the increase in maternal mortality to complications for mothers due to malnutrition and lack of health care, especially in the last months of pregnancy.

The camp confirmed that there is only one midwife in the area, and that women struggle during childbirth to reach her in time, which increases the rate of deaths during childbirth.

They said that doctors in the camp dispense one medicine for all diseases, and pointed out that there are Sudanese doctors among the refugees who asked to work as volunteers to help and treat patients, but the camp administration rejected their request.

They described the conditions in the camp as difficult, and pointed to the difficulty of obtaining drinking water due to the delay (tanker) that brings water to the camp every week.
