“Under siege for forty days” … violent clashes in El-Obeid

 

Violent clashes in “El-Obeid” renewed with light and heavy weapons between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, according to witnesses on Wednesday, .

Eyewitnesses told Anadolu News Agency that “violent clashes erupted west of the city of El-Obeid, in which artillery shelling and light weapons were used.”

Eyewitnesses explained that “the clashes led to the closure of the city’s market, and the flight of dozens of citizens from their homes in the western neighborhoods of the city.”

Since the outbreak of the war in mid-April, the city of El Obeid has witnessed sporadic clashes between the two parties to the conflict in Sudan, which led to electricity and water cuts and the deterioration of health services in hospitals.

The strategic, vital city has been under siege by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces for more than 40 days, according to local sources, “water is no longer running out in taps, food is running out, electricity has been cut off for a month, health facilities have closed, and fuel is only available in markets and sold at more than 6 times its normal price” According to a local sources.

El Obeid sits on the crossroads linking western and southern Sudan to the capital Khartoum, and its strategic location has led to conflict since the start of the war as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF)siege intensified in recent weeks.

The Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces accuse each other of starting the fighting and committing violations during a series of truces that did not succeed in ending clashes that left more than 3,000 dead, most of them civilians and more than 2.2 million people are displaced inside and outside one of the world’s poorest countries, according to the Ministry of Health and the United Nations.
