Published:

Cairo (March 29, 2025) – Egypt reaffirmed its support for Sudanese national institutions in their efforts to restore stability and peace in Sudan, according to a statement by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday. This came during talks between Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and his Sudanese counterpart Ali Youssef Al-Sharif in Cairo.

The discussions focused on “the latest developments in Khartoum” and ways to mobilize international and regional support for Sudan. Al-Sharif briefed Abdelatty on “recent developments in the capital Khartoum following the Sudanese army’s announcement of its liberation from Rapid Support Forces (RSF).”

Abdelatty emphasized “Egypt’s full solidarity with Sudan” and reiterated Cairo’s steadfast position supporting Sudanese national institutions and their efforts to restore security and stability. He also stressed Egypt’s commitment to “respecting Sudan’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.”

Liberation of Khartoum and Army Advances
The Sudanese army recently announced full control over the capital Khartoum after nearly two years of battles against RSF forces, which had controlled large parts of the city since April 2023. The army’s advances included reclaiming strategic sites such as the General Command headquarters, the Central Bank, the National Intelligence Service headquarters, and Khartoum International Airport.

A military source reported that army operations have extended to other states, with government forces regaining key areas like Wad Madani in Gezira State and several villages in northern White Nile and Gezira states.

Facilitations for Sudanese Residents in Egypt
In a related development, the Sudanese government announced new measures to assist Sudanese residents in Egypt wishing to return home. Sudan Airways launched an initiative offering a 50% discount on tickets for 50 seats per flight for returning citizens, along with free tickets for children of war martyrs. EgyptAir also announced a new schedule of four weekly flights between Cairo and Port Sudan.

Official statistics indicate that Egypt has hosted approximately 1.2 million Sudanese since the outbreak of the war, reflecting strong ties between the two nations.
