Several Sudanese cities witnessed widespread popular celebrations on Wednesday, rejoicing in the victories of the Sudanese army and the recapture of strategic areas in the capital Khartoum, following the retreat of Rapid Support Forces (RSF) fighters.
On Wednesday evening, the streets of Port Sudan were crowded with dozens of Sudanese who came out to celebrate the army’s announcement of its control over Khartoum after two years of bloody war that divided the country and led to the displacement of millions. For many, this means returning home.
More than three and a half million Sudanese fled the capital during the war between the army and the RSF since April 2023, with many seeking refuge in Port Sudan, which also became the temporary headquarters of the government.
Moataz Essam, one of the celebrants, told AFP, “God willing, we will return… and celebrate Eid in our homes,” expressing his happiness with “the army’s victories.”
These celebrations were not limited to Sudan alone but extended to include other Arab countries. Sudanese abroad expressed their joy at this achievement, which they described as great.
In Egypt, Sudanese celebrated the liberation of Khartoum from the grip of RSF militias. Bloggers expressed their gratitude to Egypt, both government and people, for its role in hosting millions of Sudanese during the crisis without any discrimination or harm. They praised Egyptian support, which included covering the needs of Sudanese citizens with Egyptian products when Sudanese factories were destroyed due to the war, helping to fill the local deficit in various Sudanese states.
Celebrations reached the “sky” on board a flight. Passengers and crew of a Tarco Aviation plane were seen in a video celebrating the liberation of Khartoum from RSF militias. The company posted the video on its official Facebook account, commenting: “We return to our joys and victory over every pain. Tarco Aviation crew celebrates with passengers on the flight from Doha on the occasion of liberating the capital of beauty.. Khartoum, and soon for every inch of the great Sudan.”
The video showed moments full of enthusiasm, with passengers’ laughter mixing with joyful ululations, and some performing traditional Sudanese dances expressing their happiness at this historic event.
These celebrations came in an atmosphere full of hope to overcome adversities and begin building a better future for Sudan. In its comment, the company confirmed that it views this occasion as the beginning of turning a page full of pain and opening a new page titled work and optimism, indicating that Sudanese at home and abroad are united in joy over this great achievement.
