The Sudanese army pursues Hemedti’s forces in Omdurman

Published:

The Sudanese army continued on Thursday to expel Rapid Support Forces (RSF) fighters from a few pockets in Omdurman city, coinciding with widespread popular celebrations marking the liberation of the capital Khartoum from the grip of forces led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo “Hemedti” on Tuesday. These forces had controlled large parts of the city since the war broke out in mid-April 2023.

Military Reinforcements

A military source told Al-Quds Al-Arabi that the army has sent more military reinforcements to Omdurman to carry out extensive operations aimed at liberating the remaining neighborhoods and sites belonging to the RSF in the western and southern parts of the city. Many RSF soldiers had fled there after escaping from Khartoum via the Jebel Awlia Dam bridge. The army has fully recaptured Khartoum and Khartoum North cities, while some pockets remain under Hemedti’s forces’ control in Omdurman, specifically in its western and southern parts.

The army also regained control of some villages in the north of White Nile and Gezira states adjacent to Khartoum from the south, while the RSF still controls 4 main states in Darfur region and some other areas in Kordofan.

Security authorities in River Nile State in the north of the country announced that ground defenses repelled drone attacks launched by the RSF on the cities of Atbara and Al-Damer, without mentioning any figures or information about casualties.

On Wednesday morning, the Sudanese army carried out widespread deployment operations in neighborhoods south and east of Khartoum city and regained control of all military and strategic sites, while RSF elements fled via the Jebel Awlia Dam bridge towards Saliha and Al-Muwailih areas south of Omdurman and then to Kordofan and Darfur in western Sudan.

However, the RSF denied losing the battle against the Sudanese army, speaking of “repositioning and opening up on fighting fronts.” In a statement, they said: “We loudly declare that our forces have not lost any battle, but have repositioned and opened up on fighting fronts in a way that ensures achieving their military objectives that ultimately lead to resolving this battle in favor of the Sudanese people.”

Latest military developments indicate the army continues to comb the rest of the capital’s neighborhoods. The Khartoum state government announced that the army has seized large quantities of weapons, ammunition, missiles, vehicles, armored vehicles, and jamming systems from RSF warehouses and sites after they fled the state. This comes amid cautious calm on the fighting fronts south of Omdurman and Kordofan, and renewed clashes and artillery shelling in El Fasher city in western Sudan.

Observers believe that the battlefield will shift to Kordofan and Darfur as the army seeks to break the siege on its forces in the cities of Al-Nahud and Babanusa in West Kordofan and El Fasher in North Darfur, then launch attacks on the Darfur desert axis to cut off RSF supply lines.

Meanwhile, Sudanese people took to the streets in liberated Khartoum, Atbara, Port Sudan, Karima, and other cities across the country, chanting slogans like “One Army, One People” and victory songs. The celebrations also extended to Cairo, Egypt, which is teeming with hundreds of thousands of people who fled the hell of war in Sudan.
