Al-Burhan: We are working to create conditions for an elected civilian government to take power

Port Sudan (Al-Yurae) – Sudan’s Sovereignty Council Chairman, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, announced on Thursday that the army is working to create conditions for an elected civilian government to take power in the country.

This statement came during al-Burhan’s meeting with Heiko Nitzschke, Germany’s Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, in Port Sudan, eastern Sudan, according to a statement issued by the Sovereignty Council.

The discussion focused on the Sudanese government’s efforts to achieve peace and facilitate humanitarian aid delivery, as well as ongoing initiatives for a comprehensive national dialogue and forming a competent government to prepare for elections.

Al-Burhan affirmed the military’s unwillingness to engage in political activities, while the German envoy expressed his country’s readiness to support reconstruction efforts in Sudan.

This announcement follows the army’s recapture of Khartoum International Airport and other strategic sites in the capital on Wednesday, marking significant progress for the first time since the war with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) began in April 2023.

Estimates suggest that between 20,000 and 130,000 people have been killed in the conflict, with approximately 15 million displaced.
