Sudan squanders win and draws with South Sudan in World Cup qualifiers

Benghazi: Sudan squandered a victory within their grasp after a thrilling 1-1 draw against South Sudan on Tuesday in the sixth round of Group B in the African qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Sudan lost their lead after Mohamed Eisa’s goal in the 76th minute of the match, which was held at the Martyrs of Benina Stadium in the Libyan city of Benghazi. South Sudan managed to equalize with a late goal scored by David Omot Sebit in the 98th minute, resulting in each team earning one point.

The Sudanese team continued to drop points after also drawing 0-0 with Senegal in Benghazi in the previous round, temporarily remaining at the top of the group with 12 points.

As for the South Sudan team, they increased their tally to 3 points, staying in fifth place, second from bottom.

The nine teams that top the nine groups in Africa will qualify for the World Cup, while the second-placed teams in each group will compete for qualification to the 2026 World Cup through the global playoff.
