The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) successfully liberated the Egyptian embassy in Khartoum on Saturday from the control of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), who had held the area since the conflict began in April 2023.

According to Sudanese military sources, the army carried out a precise and coordinated operation in central Khartoum, where the Egyptian embassy is located. The operation involved intense clashes with RSF fighters. After hours of fighting, SAF forces managed to expel the RSF from the embassy and surrounding areas, including the strategic Al-Amarat district.

The sources reported that more than 100 RSF fighters were killed during the operation, and their equipment and weapons were seized.

A Sudanese army spokesperson stated, “Our forces have liberated the Egyptian embassy, a symbol of sovereignty and brotherly relations with Egypt, from the hands of the rebels. This step reflects our determination to reclaim the entire capital.” He added that operations are ongoing to secure remaining areas in central Khartoum.

Since the outbreak of war between SAF and RSF in April 2023, Khartoum has witnessed fierce battles, with RSF taking control of large parts of the capital, including government and diplomatic buildings. The Egyptian embassy, located in the heart of Khartoum, was one such site seized by RSF, raising significant concerns in Cairo over the safety of its diplomatic mission.

In recent weeks, SAF has made significant advances, regaining key sites such as the Presidential Palace and National Intelligence headquarters. The liberation of the Egyptian embassy marks another milestone in its efforts to reclaim strategic locations in Khartoum.

This development follows SAF’s announcement on Friday that it had recaptured the Presidential Palace, signaling an acceleration in its military campaign to regain full control of the capital.

Gratitude to Egypt

On Saturday, SAF expressed gratitude to Egypt for hosting Sudanese citizens during the conflict. The army praised Egypt’s efforts in strengthening bilateral ties and fostering brotherhood between the two nations.

Sudanese media shared a video showing SAF soldiers standing in front of the Egyptian embassy after its liberation. In the video, soldiers thanked Egypt for providing refuge to thousands of Sudanese fleeing the conflict, highlighting how this support has strengthened relations between both countries.

The liberation of the Egyptian embassy comes just a day after SAF regained control of the Presidential Palace, indicating a shift in momentum toward SAF’s favor as it continues to reclaim strategic positions across Khartoum.
