UNICEF: 3.3 million children at risk of acute malnutrition in Sudan

Published:

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) announced on Wednesday that approximately 3.3 million children are at risk of acute malnutrition in Sudan.

The UN organization stated on its X platform account that there are 5 million displaced children in the country, and 17 million children have been out of school for nearly two years due to the ongoing war in the country, calling for urgent action.

Lucia Elmi, UNICEF’s Emergency Programme Director, said that the level of crisis in Sudan is “unprecedented.”

On February 13, Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) warned that half of Sudan’s population (24.6 million people) face high levels of acute food insecurity, including 8.5 million people facing emergency or famine-like conditions.

Sudan has been experiencing a war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces since April 2023, resulting in more than 20,000 deaths and about 15 million displaced persons and refugees, according to the United Nations and local authorities.

Meanwhile, a study by American universities estimated the death toll at around 130,000
