MSF accuses RSF of detaining aid truck in Sudan

Doctors Without Borders (MSF) on Wednesday accused the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of detaining a medical supply truck belonging to it and arresting its driver in Sudan’s southern White Nile state.

“On 20 September, a rented MSF truck was forcibly detained and its driver detained at a checkpoint controlled by the Rapid Support Forces in the village of Shuqaiq in White Nile state,” the international organization said in a statement.

MSF expressed “concern for the safety of the driver and the fate of the essential medical supplies he was carrying”.

The shipment of medical equipment was on its way to Kosti in White Nile state, where MSF teams are providing primary healthcare, mental health support and other services to displaced people in the city.

The statement quoted MSF head of mission Juan Carlos as saying: “Since last July, White Nile state has faced a complete halt to humanitarian aid, and the confiscation of humanitarian aid is unacceptable.”

“We call on the RSF to provide us with any information they may have about the driver’s whereabouts and to return the truck and the medical materials it was carrying,” Carlos said.

The RSF did not comment on the organization’s accusations as of 18:00 GMT.

UN and international calls are mounting to end the war to avoid a humanitarian catastrophe that has pushed millions into starvation and death from food shortages due to fighting that has spread to 13 out of 18 states.

Since mid-April 2023, the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support have been fighting a war that has left more than 20,000 dead and nearly 10 million displaced and refugees, according to the United Nations.
