Global health: Tragic level of destruction, death, displacement and disease in Sudan – (video)

GENEVA: The level of destruction, death, displacement and disease in Sudan is “tragic”, World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Tuesday, noting that there is not enough help to treat people there.

In a post on the X platform, Ghebreyesus said that “the level of destruction, death, displacement and disease in Sudan is tragic.”

He pointed out that he participated, on Monday, in the delivery of a convoy of medical supplies to Sudan through the border crossing “Adré” with Chad.

“There is not enough aid to treat the Sudanese. They need peace.”

Since mid-April 2023, the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces have been fighting a war that has left about 18,800 dead and nearly 10 million displaced and refugees, according to the United Nations.

UN and international calls are mounting to end the war to avoid a humanitarian catastrophe that has pushed millions into starvation and death from food shortages due to fighting that has spread to 13 out of 18 states.

On August 27, the UN Office for Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in a statement that “after more than 16 months of conflict, Sudan is facing a devastating hunger catastrophe on a massive scale, with more than half of the population facing acute hunger.”

In early August, “famine conditions were confirmed in the Zamzam camp for internally displaced people in North Darfur state (western Sudan), and thousands more are likely to face similar conditions in 13 other areas at risk of famine,” OCHA said at the time.

“Access restrictions and severe funding shortfalls are hampering the ability of humanitarian workers to scale up the response to stave off hunger and famine” in Sudan.
