UN: Half a million affected by floods and rains

New York: The United Nations Office for Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) announced on Thursday that about half a million Sudanese have been affected by floods and rains since last June.

The UN office said in a statement that it is estimated that 491,100 people (88,600 families) have been affected by heavy rains and floods in 63 areas within 15 states in Sudan since the beginning of the rains last June.

“This includes an estimated 143,200 people who have been displaced.”

It added that the most affected states are North Darfur (west), the Red Sea (east), northern (north), South Darfur (west) and the Nile River (north)

The statement said that 35,518 houses completely collapsed, and about 44,993 houses were partially damaged.

The death toll from floods and rains in the country has reached 173 since June, according to the latest statistics of the Sudanese Ministry of Health on August 29.

This year’s natural and health disasters coincide with the continued suffering as a result of an ongoing war between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces since mid-April 2023, which left about 18,800 dead and nearly 10 million displaced and refugees, according to the United Nations.

UN and international calls are growing to spare Sudan a humanitarian catastrophe that has begun to push millions into starvation and death from food shortages due to fighting that has spread to 13 of the 18 states.
