Pope Francis has urged world leaders to seek ways to reach peace between Sudan’s warring parties. In a homily on Sunday from St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican, the pope called for prayers for Sudan, where the war is in its first year, saying it was time for a peaceful solution and for the guns to be silenced.
Pope Francis appealed to world leaders and Sudanese authorities to help Sudan and the large numbers of displaced people, and demanded that Sudanese refugees find welcome and protection in neighbouring countries.
The head of the Catholic Church stressed the need to stop the escalation and direct all efforts to dialogue and negotiations.
This is the second appeal made by Pope Francis to stop the war in Sudan since the beginning of this year, as he had previously made a similar appeal on February 18 in which he called on both sides to stop fighting, stressing that the war will not solve problems, but will bring death and destruction.
