Saudi Deputy Foreign Minister Walid al-Khereiji discussed on Wednesday with the US special envoy to Sudan, Tom Perriello, developments in Sudan, where calls for calm in Ramadan have not succeeded.
This came during their meeting in the capital Riyadh, according to the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA), which did not mention the details of the US envoy’s visit.
The agency pointed out that Al-Khereiji, received Perriello, at the ministry’s office in Riyadh.
During the meeting, according to the agency, they reviewed the latest developments in Sudan, discussed ways of bilateral cooperation, and discussed issues of common interest.
On Tuesday, the International Organization for Migration announced that the number of people fleeing their homes as a result of the civil war in Sudan approached 8.5 million displaced people and refugees.
Since mid-April, battles have been continuing in several provinces between the army led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, led by Mohamed Hamdan Daglo “Hemedti”, leaving about 13,900 dead, according to the United Nations.
Arab and African mediation efforts have been unable to end the war, which the United Nations World Food Programme warned on March 6 threatens to trigger the world’s largest hunger crisis.
