Yasser Al-Atta: We will not hand over power to civilians except through elections

Al-Atta: “The transitional period will be supervised by the army commander with the police and security (Anatolia)

Yasser al-Atta, assistant commander-in-chief of Sudan’s army, said his country’s armed forces would not hand over power to civilian political forces without elections.

Al-Atta, who is also a member of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, was speaking during a meeting with the National Forces Coordination (which includes armed parties and movements) in the Wadi Sedna military area in Omdurman, west of the capital Khartoum.

The private Sudanese newspaper “Al-Tayyar” broadcast on Saturday a video clip recorded of Atta in which he said, “It will not happen that the army hands over a government to a civilian political force without elections,” and stressed that “the transitional period will be supervised by army commander Abdel Fattah al-Burhan with the police and security.”

While a statement issued by the Sudanese army on Saturday quoted that Atta said that “the coming period will witness the deployment of the military institution inside and outside Khartoum, and taking the initiative on all fronts.”

The statement pointed out that the armed forces, at their best, fought the war against the Rapid Support Forces with the strategy of destroying their solid block in the beginning, and preparing and equipping in parallel for the next stages.

On October 25, 2021, al-Burhan imposed exceptional measures, including the dissolution of the Sovereign Council and the transitional ministers, and the declaration of a state of emergency, ending the participation of civilian forces in power, during a transitional period between the military and civilians following the ouster of President Omar al-Bashir in April 2019.

Since mid-April 2023, the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces led by Mohamed Hamdan Daglo “Hemedti” have been fighting a war that has left some 13,900 dead and more than 8 million displaced and refugees, according to the United Nations.
