KHARTOUM – Videos showed the commander-in-chief of the Sudanese army, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, on Thursday, among his forces at the Wadi Sedna military base west of the capital.
On August 25, Burhan left the army headquarters in central Khartoum four months after the outbreak of the Sudanese war, and headed to the Wadi Sedna military base and a number of other army garrisons, all the way to the city of Port Sudan, which later became the administrative capital of the country.
The RSF was saying Burhan was trapped at the army’s headquarters, the vicinity of which has been witnessing constant fighting between the two sides.
The Sovereign Council said in a statement on Thursday that Burhan inspected the front lines of the fighting forces in the city of Omdurman, in the presence of a member of the Sovereignty Council, Assistant Commander-in-Chief of the Army, Yasser Al-Atta.
He pointed to his follow-up on the progress of military operations in the Omdurman axis after inspecting the front forces and touring some areas retaken by the army west of the Sudanese capital Khartoum.
Burhan’s visit to the Wadi Sedna base coincides with local reports that a coup attempt by influential army officers in the city of Omdurman was foiled.
While the army did not officially comment on the news that a number of officers were arrested, amid dissatisfaction with the conduct of military operations in the country, the Wadi Sedna base is witnessing a heavy presence and successive visits by army commanders.
According to the Sudanese Sovereign Council, Burhan received on Thursday an update on the progress of operations from the Mobile Command in the city of Omdurman. Some military and civilian sites were also inspected.
Addressing soldiers in Wadi Sedna he said the army is committed to caring for the families of its employees who were killed during battles with the Rapid Support Forces and the missing, treating the wounded and injured from the regular forces and the mobilized (citizens who volunteered to fight in the ranks of the army), adding that “the armed forces and the people are in one trench to eradicate the cancer of the rebel militias and their mercenaries.”
On Tuesday, local reports said that army intelligence in the Wadi Sedna military area arrested a number of officers active in military operations in the city of Omdurman on charges of planning a coup.
Another said that the officers were detained against the background of disobeying field orders during battles with the Rapid Support Forces, noting that they clashed with Hemedti’s forces in the city of Omdurman without guidance from the leadership.
As Sudan’s war enters its tenth month, the country’s humanitarian crisis is worsening.
