The head of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, on Sunday, the government’s commitment to the democratic transition and a transitional period, which ends with general elections.
Al-Burhan said that during his meeting with the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for Sudan, Ramtan Al-Amamra, he reviewed the outputs of the Jeddah platform and the initiatives of neighboring countries and IGAD despite regional and international interventions in the results of the recent summit, according to the Sudan News Agency – “SUNA”.
For his part, Al-Amamra expressed optimism “about the possibility of achieving peace and stability, ending the war in Sudan, and returning life to normal with the concerted efforts of the Sudanese and those who are in the interest of Sudan,” according to the agency.
Al-Lamamra indicated that he held consultations during this visit with a number of officials and segments of civil society, adding that these meetings contributed a lot to informing him of the facts of the situation in Sudan and the Sudanese official point of view, towards some initiatives aimed at a peaceful solution and the launch of a peace process that leads to the desired solution that allows the Sudanese people to restore a decent life under an independent and sovereign state that plays its role in the African continent, the Arab world and the international arena.
“I came out of this meeting with the President of the Sovereign Council with accurate and useful information about the position of the Sudanese state towards a number of files,” Lamamra concluded, stressing that he will work hard with all parties to crystallize the positive role of the United Nations in this regard.
Since April 15, large-scale violent clashes between the Sudanese army forces and the Rapid Support Forces have continued in different areas of Sudan, and the two parties to the conflict have agreed many times to a ceasefire, but it has not been adhered to.
The differences between the head of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council, the commander of the Sudanese Armed Forces, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the commander of the Rapid Support Forces, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, became clear after the signing of the “framework agreement” establishing the transitional period between the military and civilian components, in December 2022, which recognized the army’s exit from politics and the handover of power to civilians.
Dagalo accused the Sudanese army of planning to stay in power, and not handing over power to civilians after the army’s demands to integrate the Rapid Support Forces under the banner of the armed forces, while the army considered the movements of the Rapid Support Forces a rebellion against the state, and the battles caused thousands to been killed and wounded, as well as millions displaced inside and outside Sudan.
