Sudan’s army on Saturday accused the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of “destroying what remains of the al-Jili oil refinery and its depots” north of the capital Khartoum.
The army said in a statement: “In continuation of its approach to destroying the country’s capabilities and systematically sabotaging vital facilities, the rebel militia (Rapid Support) targeted for the second time this month the Al-Jili refinery in Khartoum, where it destroyed today (Saturday) the rest of the refinery and its attached warehouses.”
He added: “We condemn this criminal behavior, which proves that this militia is waging its war against the Sudanese people and their national capabilities,” calling for “the need to classify it as a terrorist organization by international and regional organizations.”
The statement said the RSF “partially destroyed some of the refinery’s facilities on December 6.”
The RSF had not commented.
The “Al-Jili Refinery”, the largest oil refinery in the country, was established in the nineties of the last century, located north of the city of Bahri, north of Khartoum, and has been controlled by the Rapid Support Forces since the outbreak of fighting in mid-April.
Since mid-April, the army, led by the head of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the Rapid Support, led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti), have been fighting a war that has left more than 12,000 dead and more than 6 million displaced and refugees, according to the United Nations.
