Former Algerian Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra appointed UN envoy to Sudan

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has appointed former Algerian Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra as Personal Envoy to Sudan.

ALGIERS – Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appointed Algerian diplomat Ramtane Lamamra as personal envoy to Sudan, the United Nations said on its official website.
For his part, the spokesman for the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Stephane Dujarric, said that the headquarters of the Personal Envoy Ramtane Lamamra will not be based in Sudan.

Dujarric reported receiving a letter from the Sudanese government, announcing its decision to terminate the work of the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS).

He also stressed that the UN will continue to engage, closely, with all actors, including the Sudanese authorities and members of the Security Council, to clarify the next steps.
Lamamra’s appointment comes nearly two months after the resignation of former UN envoy to Sudan Volker Perthes after he was declared persona non grata by the Sudanese Foreign Ministry.
Ramtane Lamamra served as foreign minister in three governments in Algeria, as well as Algeria’s ambassador to Washington, and was a member of several international groups concerned with mediation and peace.
