Ghanaian Kwasi Appiah to coach Sudan national team

The Sudanese Football Association has contracted Ghanaian Kwasi Appiah, 63, to coach his first team for three years, replacing Moroccan Badou Zaki, who left the team last August.

Several Ghanaian media outlets, including Ghana Soccernet, published the details of the contract, writing: “Ghanaian coach Kwasi Appiah returned to Sudan this time as coach of the national team.”

“Appiah previously coached Sudan’s Khartoum FC from December 2014 to April 2017, where he achieved remarkable success, including a commendable career in the CAF Confederation Cup.”

The Ghanaian coach will lead Sudan during the African qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, which begins in November, and Egypt will host the team’s matches due to political turmoil in the country.

Appiah coached Ghana from 2012 to 2014 and played a major role in their qualification for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

The Ghanaian coach was appointed last August as chairman of a three-member committee to manage the affairs of Ghanaian club Ashanti Kotoko for an interim period, and as a transitional phase.

Sudan will face Togo and DR Congo in the first and second rounds of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in November.

The Sudanese federation had terminated its contract with coach Badou Zaki, former goalkeeper of the Moroccan national team, after a short trip with the “the Jedian” team after the team’s failure to qualify for the African Nations Finals in Côte d’Ivoire 2024.
