Sudan, South Sudan stress importance of final resolution of Abyei issue

Khartoum -(SUNA) – Sudan Vice-President of the Sovereignty Council and Chairman of the Supreme Committee for Political and Administrative Oversight of Abyei area General Mohamed Hamdan Daglo has stressed the need for continued coordination and cooperation between Sudan and the Republic of South Sudan, to build trust and exchange views on how to provide a solid basis for the final solution for the issue of Abyei area.

The Vice-President of the Sovereignty Council said at the joint meeting between Sudan and the Republic of South Sudan on Abyei area at Al-Salam Rotana Hotel in Khartoum today that despite the critical conditions that Sudan is going through, holding the meeting was a priority in appreciation of the sensitivity of the area’s issue and the human suffering that the communities are going through, pointing to the importance of reaching through the meeting positive results to put Abyei area on the path of just and sustainable peace.

He noted that the common historical ties between the communities of the area and the strategic relations that unite Sudan and the Republic of South Sudan are all motivating factors that contribute to achieving real progress that guarantees a better future for the residents of Abyei, calling for activating joint mechanisms and creating an appropriate environment that contributes to enhancing security, development and stability for the benefit of communities in the area, stressing the importance of participation of stakeholders and citizens of the area to enhance joint action and create an environment conducive to peaceful coexistence.

Daglo stressed opening the way for the relevant segments of the area’s society, especially youth and women, to listen to their views, which would contribute to enhancing coexistence and stability.
On the other hand South Sudan Presidential Adviser Tut Gatluak has stressed importance of reaching a final solution to the Abyei issue, noting that Abyei citizens had paid the bill of tensions in the area.

Gatluak said in his address the joint meeting , that they came carrying clear instruction from President of South Sudan Salva Kiir Mayardit to consult on resolving the issue, calling on Misseriya and Dinka Ngok to contribute to resolving the Abyei issue, reviewing the history of coexistence between the two tribes in the area.

Gatluak reviewed the efforts of the Abyei issue committees in South Sudan and Sudan to discuss the issue in all its aspects to reach a final solution, stressing their readiness to reach a final solution to the issue and to reach the best and optimal solution.

He said that Abyei area concerns Sudan and South Sudan and needs development and stability among all components, stressing the importance of sitting down to deliberate on the issue with the participation of all parties in order to reach a sustainable peace for the area.He called on the international community for more cooperation and to play a role that goes beyond humanitarian aid, to the implementation of development projects that promote local communities.

It is noteworthy that the joint meeting on Abyei, which was held in Khartoum today, came at the initiative of the Vice-President of the Sovereignty Council and it is the second of its kind to discuss sustainable solutions to the Abyei issue and provide necessary solutions to the local communities.
