Mbappe double sinks Denmark and takes France into World Cup last 16

A Kylian Mbappé double gave France a 2-1 victory over a spirited Denmark, handing Les Bleus an early ticket to the knockouts. Read FRANCE 24’s liveblog below to see how the match unfolded.

It was a great result for France – showing their resilience as well as talent against a tough, resolute Denmark.

With this victory following on from their 4-1 demolition of Australia on Wednesday, Les Bleus have proven themselves as one of the top contenders to seize the trophy.

Kylian Mbappé demonstrated more than ever that he is France’s talismanic player, with lacerating pace and darting runs throughout the match, capped by clinical finishing skills to hit the back of the net on those two occasions.

Antoine Griezmann also performed brilliantly in his new role as France’s creative midfielder – while Ousmane Dembelé was a formidable presence on the right side of Les Bleus’ attack. Olivier Giroud was unlucky against Denmark after matching Thierry Henry’s 51-goal record for France in the Australia match. Yet Giroud will have the opportunity to match Henry’s record in the World Cup knockouts, as France head to the last 16.
