June 1989 coup court: Witnesses stated Bashir told them the coup is corrective because the armed forces have become weak and exhausted

Khartoum – (SUNA) – The Court of the masterminds of the June 1989 coup heard in its session today at the Institute of Judicial and Legal Sciences headed by Maulana Hussain Al-Jack Saleh, Judge of the Supreme Court, two indictment witnesses.

The prosecution witness Mahjoub Omar Kajo victim, who is (64) years old said that on the night of the coup he was a major in the airborne forces and that he was at his work site and that he learned of the coup from Lieutenant Colonel Bakri Hassan Saleh, who conveyed to him that the army unanimously decided to take power and that the leader of the coup is Brigadier General Omar Hassan Ahmed al-Bashir.

The witness added that there was a statement they wanted to deliver to the radio and that the late Lieutenant Colonel Abdel Moneim Hassan Ali Karrar and Younis Mahmoud went with the statement to the radio, pointing out that the only objection to the coup was from the commander of the Corps of Engineers, Major General Fadl, while the rest of the officers of the arms unanimously supported the change, pointing out that the period before the coup witnessed attempts to take power, where a number of officers with the rank of brigadier general were arrested, including Ahmed Fadl and Zubair Mohammed Saleh, and said that the situation was bad with regard to The armed forces (to the extreme) due to the lack of combat equipment, while the garrisons began to fall garrison after garrison and successive defeats, and Garang said “that he would drink coffee in Shendi”.

the second witness , retired officer Ibrahim Ajbana born in 1949 has explained that he was a colonel on the night of the coup and was the commander of the special forces that follow the parachute corps, and said that he was at his home in Hajj Youssef and came to his unit as soon as he heard of the move where Brigadier General Omar Bashir assigned him to bring Ibrahim Nile Edam.

The witness added that Bashir explained that the movement is corrective because the country is in an unbearable situation and cities began to fall and the armed forces have become weak and exhausted, and said that Colonel Abdul Majid Mahjoub Mustafa, who is currently in the State of Qatar, who was referred to the pension, has asked Bashir whether the movement of the armed forces or behind them political parties or parties and that Bashir confirmed that the coup is purely military and does not have any political or partisan party.

On the other hand, the defense team had raised at the beginning of the session that the court did not issue a decision on the defense request for investigation about the sovereign body that had directed the transfer of defendants from the hospital to the central prison, and confirmed that the sick defendants are still suffering and demanding to be returned to the hospital, but the court explained to them that it is not a medical body and that the prison administration is the one who refers the patients of the defendants for treatment.

The court will continue its session next Tuesday, the twenty-ninth of November.
