High Commissioner for Human Rights on official visit to country

Khartoum-(SUNA) – The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk and an accompanying delegation will arrive in the country today, Sunday, for a four-day official visit, during which he will hold meetings with officials in the Sovereignty Council and the ministers of Foreign Affairs, Justice , Interior, the Attorney General and the national human rights mechanism.

The meetings will discuss the human rights situation in Sudan in light of Sudan’s presence as an active member in the human rights system in Geneva, and the developments achieved in this regard, besides discussion on raising and developing capacities in the areas of economic and social human rights, and the political and civil rights.

The High Commissioner will also visit El-Fasher, the capital of north Darfur state, and meet the governor of the Darfur region to discuss the obstacles facing the Juba Peace Agreement.

It is worth noting that Mr. Turk is the highest-ranking UN human rights official in the world, and his visit to Sudan is considered his first after his election on October 12, 2022, as High Commissioner for Human Rights, following Sudan’s re-election as a member of the Human Rights Council in Geneva.
