Strongly worded statement from Sudanese negotiating team condemns Ethiopia’s move to operate the(GERD)

Sudan’s negotiating team in the(GERD) issued a strongly worded statement rejecting Ethiopia’s move to operate the dam says this in complete violation of the initial agreement between them in statement published by the Sudanese News Agency it says: “The Government of the Republic of Sudan has followed the latest developments in the (Ennahda) Dam file, and the Government wishes to clarify the following in this regard:”.

That Sudan confirms its firm position in (the Ennahda) Dam negotiation that a legal agreement on filling and operating the dam should be reached. Sudan believes that its position is based on the reference of international law and the declaration of principles signed in March 2015 by the three countries.

“Sudan confirms that it took note of the statement of The Ethiopian Prime Minister issued on January 20, 2022, which was posted on his sovereignty’s Twitter page, in particular to clarify his sovereignty that Ethiopia believes that the Renaissance Dam is a good example of the principle of cooperation for the benefit of all the peoples of the coastal countries without causing significant harm. The Sudan sees the need and importance of Ethiopia taking the real steps on the ground that match this statement”.

It went on to state that :” Sudan affirms its position rejecting all unilateral measures in all matters relating to the filling and operation of the dam, and Sudan believes that the measures taken, particularly the first and second fillings and the recent procedure concerning the start-up of electricity generation turbines, are contrary to the spirit of cooperation and constitute a fundamental violation of Ethiopia’s international legal obligations, as opposed to what was agreed between the three countries in the Declaration of Principles”.

“Sudan welcomes Senegal as president of the African Union and calls for strengthening the role of the African Union so that parties can reach an agreement within a specific time frame, including changing the existing negotiating methodology”.

“Sudan confirms that its participation, in all rounds of negotiations, stems from its conviction that an agreement that takes into account the interests of the three parties can be achieved, including its important initiatives that culminated in the signing of the Declaration of Principles agreement in Khartoum in March 2015”.
