Everyone awaits the visit of the UN expert on the human rights in Sudan

 

 

Alyurae- The United Nations expert on the human rights situation in Sudan, Adama Diang, begins his first official visit to the country on Sunday, a month after the visit was postponed at the request of the Sudanese authorities.

During his visit from 20 to 24 February 2022, Mr. Deng will meet with senior Sudanese Government officials, representatives of civil society organizations, human rights defenders, heads of United Nations entities and diplomats.

Call for prompt and independent investigations

Earlier last week, UN-appointed expert on the human rights situation in Sudan Adama Diang expressed deep concern over the killing of two protesters, one of them a minor, during demonstrations against the military coup in khartoum on Monday.

With the deaths of the demonstrators on Monday, the death toll from the protests since the October 25 coup brings to 81, including a woman and 10 minors, according to the UN expert.

In a tweet, Mr. Adama Diang called on the Sudanese authorities to ensure that “prompt, independent and impartial investigations into killings, injuries, arbitrary detention of demonstrators and members of resistance committees are carried out and those responsible brought to justice”.

Mr. Diang was appointed un expert on human rights in Sudan by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in November 2021, in accordance with the UN Human Rights Council resolution.

He will hold a press conference at the end of his visit on 24 February at the HEADQUARTERS of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Khartoum at 09:30 a.m. local time.

Meanwhile, the Sudanese Professionals’ Association called on the revolutionary forces to launch a broad and diverse campaign to press for an interview with the High Commissioner for Human Rights and to highlight what the group called “crimes, massacres and widespread violations carried out by the coup d’état military council.” In order to meet Mr. Deng and highlight the crimes, massacres and widespread violations carried out by the coup d’état military council.”
